A federal magistrate on Friday recommended dismissal of a lawsuit a domestic violence victim filed alleging Luzerne County Children and Youth Services improperly snatched her children from her care. Brooke Ciprich of Yatesville filed suit in December 2015 alleging caseworkers conspired to take away her children after Eric Phillips came to the family home at 214 Willow Road on Nov. 18, 2013, and began attacking her.

Yatesville woman sentenced for role in drug ring

Two women, including a Yatesville resident, were sentenced Friday to federal prison time for their role in a conspiracy to distribute the drug known as bath salts, according to the U.S. Attorney’s Office. Maura Kathio, 27, of Yatesville, was sentenced to 18 months in prison for her role in the conspiracy that distributed the drug in Luzerne County, while Treiu Thuy Duong, 37, of Sarasota, Florida, was sentenced to 70 months.

Laflin among towns that disbanded police force

Financial concerns prompted leaders of one small municipality in Luzerne County to eliminate its local police force and turn to state police for coverage slightly more than a year ago. The borough of Laflin, which had maintained its own police force for years, has relied on state police coverage since the start of 2015.
